Unexplained Medical Problems

Needless to say, science has radically advanced modern medicine over the last one hundred years. So much has been learned about human physiology and disease that diagnostic tests are now available for quick identification of many different human conditions. We have body imaging technologies that allow doctors to look at the very structures of our bones, nerves, and tissues, even visualizing their activities in real time. Scientific research is funded to examine physiology and human disease right down to the molecular level, helping both in the understanding of the diseases and the design of new treatments for them. Drug discovery and development programs can then use this information to formulate new medicines for all our maladies. New pharmaceuticals are screened for safety and tested extensively during clinical trials. New technologies are continuously being developed to provide patients with faster and more accurate health care.

Still, there are many elements of the human condition that have not yet been explained by science. The inner workings of the human brain, the control center for all the biological processes that go on in our body, remains largely a mystery. Advances in human genetics have allowed scientists to identify genetically-encoded factors that may dictate whether we have or are likely to develop certain diseases, though for many, no more can be said than “there appears to be a genetic component.”

This is not to say that one day all of these things will not be explained or accepted, however. In recent years, for example, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) was finally accepted as a medical condition. Cases of this disease, which causes debilitating exhaustion, were recorded as early as the 19th century, though for much of the 20th century, it was dismissed as a behavioral disorder. An outbreak of CFS in the 1970's was dismissed as "mass hysteria." CFS gained the monikers "yuppie flu" and "shirker syndrome" in more recent years by skeptics who assumed the patients were inventing or imagining the symptoms.

The disconnect between modern medicine and diseases like CFS are that the cause is unknown and there are no diagnostics tests specifically for it. The effects of CFS are generally the same from patient to patient, but varied enough to making defining the disease as a collection of symptoms difficult. Now, finally, CFS has been acknowledged as a legitimate physical disease by medical professionals. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched a campaign in 2006 to raise awareness about CFS and it is currently the subject of numerous research laboratory studies all over the world.

It is this necessity to understand the causes of the symptoms and specifically define the disease that can make it difficult for patients with unexplained medical problems to get the help they need. As holistic medical practitioners, it is less important to define your condition than to treat your condition. Sometimes symptoms are not easily explained. Sometimes, despite conventional treatments for defined illnesses, some symptoms still do remain. This is where Patients Medical can help you.
