Reiki

Reiki is a natural healing therapy, which has been traced back to ancient Tibet and was rediscovered in the 19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan. According to Reiki philosophy, illnesses are caused by energy blockages in the body. The practitioner draws upon the universal energy and lays their hands on or over the patient. The energy then flows from the practitioner’s hands to the patient’s body and moves the blockages that are causing the illness. There is no manipulation, massage, acupressure or any other form of manual therapy performed on the patient. Reiki can, therefore, be considered as a spiritual ‘laying of hands’ style of treatment. Reiki has not been studied in any depth by Western science, so most of its claims are medically unsupported. Some studies have shown that the temperature of a practitioner’s hands is considerably higher after performing Reiki.

A range of disorders

Supporters of Reiki believe that it can be an effective form of healing therapy for a wide range of disorders - emotional, physical or spiritual. Some of include:

  • Stress-related disorders, such as headache and insomnia
  • Serious disorders, such as coronary heart disease and cancer
  • Emotional problems, such as depression
  • Skin problems
  • Low immunity
  • Chronic pain.

Links to Tibetan Buddhism

In Japanese, ‘Rei’ means universal and ‘ki’ means life energy. It is believed that Reiki was practiced as a healing therapy in ancient times by Tibetan Buddhists. This knowledge was forgotten until the 19th century, when it was unearthed by Dr Mikao Usui, a theology teacher who was initially trying to discover the force behind the healing hands of Christ. The principles of Reiki were said to have come to Dr Usui in a vision. In honor of his discovery, Reiki is also known as the Usui system of natural healing.

Universal energy

Reiki is based on the premise that universal energy flows through all living things. When blockages occur, this energy cannot flow freely through the body. An experienced Reiki practitioner can tap into the universal energy and channel energy to move these blockages. With these blockages removed, it is claimed, the body cells are then prompted to heal naturally.

The Reiki procedure

A typical session lasts around one hour. The patient sits or lies comfortably, fully clothed. The practitioner first harmonizes themselves with the universal energy, and then places their hands on or over the patient’s body at 12 key areas. The transfer of universal energy is experienced by the patient as warmth or tingling. Many patients report feeling relaxed or refreshed after treatment.

Reiki General cautions

Seeking healing therapy for insomnia and other non-life threatening disorders will do no harm. However, some practitioners claim that serious diseases, such as cancer, can be healed by Reiki. This may prompt a person with cancer to abandon medically proven treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Be guided by your doctor or specialist. Treat as suspect any Reiki practitioner who advises you to abandon your conventional medical treatment.

Choosing a Reiki practitioner

Any person practicing as a Reiki practitioner must have completed a first degree course, followed by a second degree - or practitioner’s course - taught by an experienced Reiki master. The minimum time between the two levels is about three months, but it may take much longer, depending on the person.
